If you recognize any of these images, odds are real good you were born in the sun-faded, shag-carpeted 1970's. Maybe you used one of those red things with the dial and numbers to make a request to your local radio station (KJ108 anyone?). And maybe you spent your Friday nights all request hours or Sunday mornings with Casey Kasem's top 40 countdown with the hope of catching your favorite song to create your curated mix tape.
Maybe you played it on your boom box. (That's for sure where you made your mixed tape in the first place). Or maybe you popped that tape into your walkman and skated away...
Nostalgia on a Plate
Green Bay born and raised, Maggie is inspired by nostalgic iconography and adding clever or quirky details to each piece. She hand draws the images on plates and trays in her South Minneapolis home.
What I love about Maggie's work is that it immediately makes people smile. Some even share stories about how their Mom had fridge full of Tab in the garage, or how their girlfriend loves to rollerskate.
Yesterday's NY Times Morning Briefing caught my attention about Mix tapes and titled "Fast Forward" by Melissa Kirsch. Seems nostalgia is on a lot of our minds right now.
The series above is classic my Dad.
Maybe he wouldn't want this information shared, but based on what I've been hearing from so many others, tighty-whities were the Dad undergarment du jour circa 1978 - 1988 (or whenever it was hammer-pants came in to fashion.) This photo of my Dad gardening, Old Milwaukee in hand, probably heading to the backyard to throw some burgers on the grill is brought to life with Maggie's visual recollections of these iconic '80's items.

Meet Maggie: September 18 at Mercer
We welcome Maggie to Mercer, Friday, September 18 from 4pm - 7pm demonstrating her drawing process on bisque ware. We'll also be spinning the best hits of the '80's and taking requests. And maybe we'll figure out how to make a tasty Spam appetizer, or a Tab-inspired cocktail. Hope to see you then!
